General News – applies to all three phases
There is no school on Friday 16th June as it is a public holiday. We wish all our families a warm and wonderful long weekend. School resumes, as normal, on Monday 19th June.
We encourage all families to have a look at the new website on www.courtney.co.za where you will find an array of information such as admissions information and tuition fees for 2018. Each phase has its own Classroom Showcase section whereby interesting activities and children’s work is uploaded. Have a look and enjoy….
New Admissions for 2018
A reminder to parents who wish to enrol new and younger siblings, at any of the phases, for 2018, to start the process as soon as possible to avoid disappointment as some classes already have waiting lists.
Empty Medicine Bottles Required
Teacher Lauren, from Courtney College, has asked for all the Courtney children and students to bring in any sized empty medicine bottles (with the lids of course), particularly the GLASS BROWN medicine bottles. These can be handed in to homeroom teachers who will ensure they get to Teacher Lauren. Thank you to those who have already brought some bottles in.
Community Charity Awareness
Winter is here in full force and the poor and destitute members of our communities struggle at this time. We appeal to all our children and students to help by bringing an item of the following to be donated to a charity organisation which helps to feed poor children and families in Pretoria and the surrounding areas. Items include: tinned food; mealie-meal, maize meal, samp, rice, canned soup or packet soup, peanut butter, sugar, tea, coffee. These donations can be handed in at the school offices and must be brought in by Thursday 15 June. Thank you to those who have already brought their donations in, much appreciated.

Courtney International Day
Our ever-popular Courtney International Day event shall take place on Saturday 16th September 2017. Please save this date, more information to follow soon. South Africa celebrates National Heritage Day on 24th September and this international event aims to celebrate our diverse cultural heritage which is truly evident at our school. This event will be held at the Primary School Campus.
Public Holidays Coming Up
There will be no school on Friday 16th June as it is Youth Day, a Public Holiday in South Africa.
There will be no school on Wednesday 9th August as it is National Woman’s Day, a Public Holiday.
There will be no school on Monday 25th September as it is Heritage Day, a South African Public Holiday (Bank Holiday).

Courtney Kids News – applies to children in Grades 000 and 00
Courtney Kids Aftercare
All children staying at school later than 16:00 will not be transported to the Courtney House Primary Campus anymore. Late afternoon aftercare will resume at the pre-school, please collect your child from the Courtney Kids Campus no later than 17:00.
Tiny Tots Programme
The Tiny Tots programme has officially started. Children between the ages of 2 and 3 years can attend this programme on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Courtney Kids Parent Meeting
Thank you to all the parents who attended this meeting on Thursday 8 June at 17:30 at the Courtney Kids Campus. Ideas shared and comments made shall be attended to as soon as possible.
Courtney House News – applies to children in Reception Year to Year 6
Children in Grade 3 to 6 start their Mid-Year Examinations on Monday 12th June. We wish them much success and look forward to their great progress. Examinations conclude on Friday 23rd June.
Thank you to all the children for participating in the pyjama parade and for their contributions towards fundraising for the Stage Production to be staged during 2018.
Children in Grade 3 to 6 shall not receive any written homework during the examination sessions.
Amy Pienaar from RP Agencies, has arranged for Monica to be available every Thursday morning between 07:30 and 10:00 in the Uniform Shop (opposite the teacher parking bays) for sales and orders as well as for children to be sent for fitting of uniform items. Parents will also receive a letter from Amy explaining some of the changes in response to concerns raised by parents during the general school survey. There is a sample, with Thelma at the school office, of the proposed new summer golf shirt for boys and girls which is of a light-weight, durable and breathable fabric which will not fade over time with extensive washing and is more comfortable for wear. These are priced at between R 230 and R 250 per shirt. Please have a look and let us know what you think.
There are a lot of brand new uniform items in Lost Property. A reminder, to parents, to please label all items clearly with your child’s name and surname so that items can be returned, should they be misplaced.
Student of the Week
Each week, a child from each class is identified as “Student of the Week” for showing excellence or great progress in various areas. Congratulations to the children who received their badges last week for “Excellent Communication Skills”. This week’s theme will be for “Most Progress in Reading (Reception Year to Grade 3) and for Most Progress in ICT (Grade 4 to 6)”.
We have noticed that children are arriving very late. A reminder, to parents, that school officially starts at 07:50 each morning. Please ensure that children arrive on time for school. All lessons officially commence at exactly 08:00 and latecomers miss out on important lesson content.
Sweets and Healthy Eating Policy
Parents are reminded that sweets and sugary foods are not allowed at school during the week. Children may bring a small sweet treat on Fridays and there is Tuck Shop where they can purchase a treat or two. If teachers hand out a sweet treat or use this as part of a lesson, it is in a controlled measure but children may not bring these items to school otherwise.
Toys and Fads
Children may not have fidget spinners or any other toys, fads and small gadgets at school. These are not permitted and will be confiscated if they are at school. The only exception is when it is required as part of a lesson for ‘show-and-tell’ or a specific presentation.
All children from Reception Year to Grade 6 will participate in a Quizmasters Quiz on Wednesday 28th June during the school morning. The four house teams will compete against each other for scores. The challenge is on…….get those general knowledge thinking caps on!! Teachers will start exposing the children to some of the General Knowledge content as a help.
Mid-Year Academic Progress Reports
Mid-Year academic reports will be available for collection from the school office on Tuesday 8th August.
National Science Olympiad
Children in Grade 4 to 6 have been invited to participate in the National Science Olympiad which will take place on Tuesday 1st August during the school morning. Information slips for those children who have shown an interest have been made available. More details about this Olympiad will be available soon. The Grade 3 children will participate in the Olympiad but internally to provide them with an opportunity to experience a Science Olympiad.
Children in Reception Year to Grade 5 will start receiving poems to learn. These children will participate in a Poetry and Speech Festival during the third term. They will be expected to recite their poem in front of an audience as well as the adjudicators who will give each participant a certificate and report. Parents are also invited to attend and watch. The date of the event will be finalised soon.

Courtney College News – applies to students in Year 7 to A/AS-Level
This was very well attended and enjoyed by all. Thank you to all parents who attended the Parent-Teacher Afternoon and for taking a sincere interest in their child’s academic development and progress.
College students will participate in an Inter-Class UNO Championship, starting this week, to find the College UNO Champ of 2017. Creative adaptations of this popular card game have been allowed to make the rounds more interesting but also more challenging. Thank you to Teachers Cyd, CJ and Patrick for the initiative as they proceed with this throughout the term. We wish our students the best of luck. Let the UNO games begin…
