General News – applies to all students

Last Day of Term

School closes for the 2019 academic year on Wednesday 11 December at 12:00 midday. Aftercare supervision will continue as normal on this day.

Festive Wishes

Some of our families are leaving for their summer holiday slightly early, so we extend best wishes to these families for a safe, peaceful and wonderful holiday and festive season and look forward to their return in the new year, well-rested and beaming with joy.

No Tolerance for Misconduct at School

We wish to remind parents and students of the school’s Behaviour Policies and Code of Conduct. A no tolerance approach to teasing, bullying, hate speech, theft, misconduct of any kind, use of inappropriate language or symbolism, sexual harassment and forms of disrespect towards teachers and peers will be taken, with immediate suspension and expulsion being the consequences.

The policies and code of conduct apply at school during school hours as well as during any school-related functions, evening events, special days, camps and other events which may be at different venues.

Parents are asked to read the code of conduct and school policies thoroughly and to discuss such content with their children (at age-appropriate levels of course) so as to reiterate the consequences of negative behaviour. We wish to maintain strict discipline at all our campuses and ask that parents and students comply with the requirements set out in our school policies.

National Dress on National Days

We remind all our families that children may come to school wearing their country’s traditional clothing on the National Day or Independence Day of their country.

Primary Campus News – applies to children in Reception Year to Year 5

Welcome to New Teacher and Positions

We are thrilled to announce that Courtney House, due to such remarkable popular demand, will be running a second class for Reception Year (Grade 0) from January 2020.

We welcome Nichole Wilkins who will be the additional teacher for Reception Year and who will start officially on 5 December 2019 for orientation and training as well as to familiarise herself with the school, the children and staff as well as the traditions and routines. We are excited for this amazing new beginning and wish her everything of the best. We know that Teacher Glenda, who is excellent with the Reception Year curriculum, will also provide her with superb guidance and assistance.

We are also excited to announce that Teacher Refilwe will move on to becoming Teacher Nichole’s teacher assistant.

Maternity Leave

We wish Teacher Allison everything of the best as she starts her maternity leave and we hope all goes well in the next few weeks as she awaits her precious bundle of joy to arrive.

Prize Giving

The prize giving for the primary school campus shall take place on Thursday 5 December 2019 at 18:00 in the evening. This event shall be held at the Brooklyn Theatre, Thomas Edison Street, Menlo Park.

For the evening of the prize giving, children are to wear civvies but to dress in something appropriate for smart-casual or party wear.

All parents and relatives are invited to attend and to come and watch the award’s ceremony. The event will start at 18:00 promptly and will end at around 20:45. Parents do not need to purchase any tickets to attend this event.

We request that parents and children are on time please!

Prize Giving Rehearsal – Thursday 5 December

A morning rehearsal of the prize giving proceedings has been arranged for the morning of Thursday 5 December at the Brooklyn Theatre.

Please ensure that your child is at school on this day. The bus to transport the children to the Brooklyn Theatre leaves promptly at 07:50 so please ensure that children are not late. Rehearsals start at 08:15 and end at 12:30. Children shall be transported, by bus, to school after the rehearsals. Parents are not permitted at this rehearsal.

Children are to wear full Courtney House school uniform at this rehearsal.

Text Book Orders for 2020 -IMPORTANT!

Parents are also asked to refrain from trying to purchase titles themselves as there have been some title changes due to books being out of print.

In addition, some parents who have tried to order books independently often end up waiting till April before books arrive. Text books are ordered in bulk batches through suppliers who are often able to provide books at cheaper rates, which makes it far more economical for parents to order and purchase directly through the school.

Languages and Grammar Books

Children are required to keep their text books used for English Grammar as well as French, Afrikaans and Spanish as these books are used in the following year or two.

Adventure Camp for February 2020 – Year 3 – 7

There are still a few places available for late reservations for the leadership/team-building/educational and adventure camp which will take place in Cape Town in February 2020. This is a wonderful opportunity whereby children learn a variety of skills which cannot be accomplished in a classroom.

Parents who would like their child to attend can make reservation bookings with Thelma at the school office.

Civvies Days

As a special treat, children may wear civvies (ordinary clothes of their choice) for the last three days of school: 9, 10 and 11 December.

Day Visit to National Children’s Theatre and Acrobranch in Johannesburg

All is set for the outing to the National Children’s Theatre in Parktown, Johannesburg on Monday 9 December during the school day. All the teachers and some assistant staff shall accompany the children on these visits. Children must bring their own lunch packs for the picnics.

Children in Reception Year and Grade 1 will be entertained with a stage performance of Dr Seuss’ renowned ‘Cat in the Hat’. They will return to school after enjoying a picnic at the theatre grounds.

The Grade 2 – 5 children will be entertained with a stage performance of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ based on Roald Dahl’s Children’s Novel. After this, they will proceed to the Melrose Acrobranch Park for a picnic in the garden followed by a variety of Acrobranch activities and a chance at the Ziplining. Parents must take note that these children will only arrive back at school at approximately 15:30 on this day. Additional indemnity forms for Acrobranch were handed out last week and these need to be completed and signed for your child to attend.

Please remember to bring a hat along and wear sunscreen.

Children dress in civvies on this day, wearing comfortable, casual clothes.

Thank you to parents who have already made payments for this outing.
