General News – applies to all three phases

Welcome Back

Welcome back to all the families and a special welcome to all the new families. We have had a busy but a great start to the new school year and we look forward to a prosperous, successful and wonderful 2018.

Congratulations on Excellent IGCSE and AS/A Level Results

Once again, we are proud to inform our parents that our student body has achieved in accordance with the world- wide distribution of results. Out of 141 entries, 21 papers were awarded an A, 33 a B, 39 a C, 21 a D and 27 an E. Of the 21 A’s, 11 of them were an A* where students attained more than 90% for the particular subject. Our top student achieved 5 A’s.

Congratulations, once again, to all the students who wrote their Cambridge International Examinations and who attained such superb results. We are proud of their achievements. Congratulations, too, to the teachers who were dedicated and committed during the preparation of these students for their international examinations. Their efforts do not go unnoticed.

Listeriosis Outbreak in Gauteng

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases has released a situation report on a serious outbreak of Listeriosis in South Africa, but particularly in Gauteng. Listeriosis is a type of food poisoning caused by eating foods contaminated by Listeria bacteria and symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, neck stiffness, vomiting and stomach-related complaints. The Department of Health urges anybody with such symptoms to consult a medical practitioner as soon as possible. Extra special care with food and the clean preparation of food is essential. Frozen foods and raw meat, chicken and fish is to be cooked properly and at high temperatures to avoid contamination. Thorough washing of hands is highly recommended, especially before and after eating.

Courtney Kids News – applies to children in Grades 000 and 00

Parent Information Meeting

Parents are invited to attend an information meeting on Wednesday 24 January at 17:00 at the pre-school campus.

Extra Murals

All extra mural registration forms must be returned to school no later than Friday 26 January.

Foreign Language Classes

The foreign languages: Afrikaans, French and Spanish will commence this week. These classes are presented on Tuesdays during the school morning.


Swimming classes for the pre-school children starts on Thursday 25 January. Parents are reminded to pack in a swimming towel, swim-cap, sun-block and extra underwear. Swimming takes place during the school mornings and children are transported to and from the swimming pool in our school bus.

Courtney House News – applies to children in Reception Year to Year 6

Welcome to New Teachers and Staff

A hearty welcome to the following new teachers at the Primary Campus: Heather; Claire; Melanie; Glenda; and Allison. We wish them a wonderful time at our school and thank them for their diligent work and enthusiasm, thus far.

We also welcome Deyvie Msiza, who will be assisting with aftercare during the afternoons.


Swimming resumes on Tuesday 23 January. Children are required to wear the correct swimwear (navy-blue swim shorts or full costume as well as a swim cap) and parents are reminded to pack in a swimming towel, sun-block and extra underwear. Children may arrive at school wearing their swimwear underneath their school uniform if they wish. Swimming takes place during the school mornings and children are transported to and from the swimming pool in our school bus. The swimming schedule is as follows:

Tuesdays: Grades 5, 4, 2 and Reception Year

Wednesdays: Grades 6, 3 and Grade 1

A Star in the Making

We are proud to announce that one of our Grade 4 students, Rebecca Wallick, has been selected out of hundreds of children, to perform a lead-role in the famous musical, “The Sound of Music” which is to be staged at the Teatro Theatre at Monte Casino during March-April this year. Congratulations to her and her parents on this outstanding achievement.


Parents are invited to attend a “meet-and-greet” on Wednesday 31 January from 17:00 till 18:15. This is an opportunity for the parents to meet the teachers and also get to know some of the other parents. We hope to see as many parents there as possible.

Reception Year and Grade 1 Meeting

Parents of children in Reception Year and Grade 1 are invited to attend an important meeting on Thursday 25 January at 17:15. This meeting will assist parents with the expectations for their child’s initial learning phase.

Extra Mural Activities

Children will receive extra mural schedules during the week. These schedules contain information about the extra mural activities presented for Term 1. Please complete the form and return to the school office, with the payment enclosed, by Friday 23 January. All extra mural activities, both internal and external activities, will commence the week of 29 January.

Stationery Packs

Please direct any queries, concerns or questions pertaining to stationery packs ordered through Rockercen Stationery to Nicola Wicks on 082 468 6678. This includes any packs which have items that are missing and/or damaged or broken.

Cambridge Text Books

Not all text books have been delivered due to a shipment of books which were water-damaged and had to be returned to the UK. As soon as text books have arrived, they will be handed out to the children. Parents are asked to ensure that all these text books are covered in a clear, transparent plastic cover and clearly labelled with your child’s name and surname.

Message Sheets and Homework Diaries

Children will receive homework as of Monday 22 January. Please check the message sheets (Reception Year to Grade 3) or homework diaries (Grade 4 to 6) for homework tasks as well as messages or important details.

Adventure and Leadership Camp

Parents of children who are signed up to attend the Ingwe Adventure Camp in Plettenburg Bay in February 2018 are reminded to finalise ALL payments this week. In addition, two certified copies of your child’s birth certificate are required for the flights. Please submit these in at the school office before 31 January.

Tuck Shop

Tuck Shop will start on Friday 26 February. Please send money with your child, items will range between R5 and R10.

Courtney College News – applies to students in Year 7 to A/AS-Level

Student Guidance Programme

This year, Johan and Mia will be running our Student Guidance Programme. They will be on the premises three times a week: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. They are able to assist students from Grade 7 to AS/A Level in the following areas: career assessments and guidance; subject choices; emotional support; general guidance and advice with regard to issues related to the teenage years. They will be presenting an hour lesson to Grade 7 and 8 students per week in order to improve their study skills and enhance test/examination preparation.

Extra Murals

Extra mural forms will go out on Monday. Please return the form with the correct amount of payment on or before Friday 26 January. All extra murals to start on Monday 29 January.
