Cambridge International AS and A Level Mathematics builds on the skills acquired at Cambridge IGCSE (or equivalent) level.
Courtney College offers students the opportunity to take Pure Mathematics only (AS Level only) or Pure Mathematics and Mechanics (AS Level or A Level).
AS Level Mathematics
At the end of a two year course, AS Level candidates sit the following Cambridge International examinations:
- Paper 1: Pure Mathematics 1 (P1)
- 1 hour 45 minutes
- About 10 shorter and longer questions
- 75 marks weighted at 60% of total
plus one of the following papers:
- Paper 2: Pure Mathematics 2 (P2)
- 1 hour 15 minutes
- About 7 shorter and longer questions
- 50 marks weighted at 40% of total
- OR Paper 4: Mechanics 1 (M1)
- 1 hour 15 minutes
- About 7 shorter and longer questions
- 50 marks weighted at 40% of total
A Level Mathematics
At the end of a two year course, A Level candidates sit the following Cambridge International examinations:
- Paper 1: Pure Mathematics 1 (P1)
- 1 hour 45 minutes
- About 10 shorter and longer questions
- 75 marks weighted at 30% of total
- Paper 3: Pure Mathematics 3 (P3)
- 1 hour 45 minutes
- About 10 shorter and longer questions
- 75 marks weighted at 30% of total
- Paper 4: Mechanics 1 (M1)
- 1 hour 15 minutes
- About 7 shorter and longer questions
- 50 marks weighted at 20% of total
- Paper 5: Mechanics 2 (M2)
- 1 hour 15 minutes

Syllabus Outline
As well as demonstrating skill in the appropriate techniques, candidates will be expected to apply their knowledge in the solution of problems. Individual questions set may involve ideas and methods from more than one section of the relevant content list.
For all units, knowledge of the content of Cambridge O Level/Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is assumed.
Unit P1: Pure Mathematics 1 (Paper 1)
- Quadratics
- Functions
- Coordinate geometry
- Circular measure
- Trigonometry
- Vectors
- Series
- Differentiation
- Integration
Unit P2: Pure Mathematics 2 (Paper 2)
Knowledge of the content of unit P1 is assumed, and candidates may be required to demonstrate such knowledge in answering questions.
- Algebra
- Logarithmic and exponential functions
- Trigonometry
- Differentiation
- Integration
- Numerical solution of equations
Unit P3: Pure Mathematics 3 (Paper 3)
Knowledge of the content of unit P1 is assumed, and candidates may be required to demonstrate such knowledge in answering questions.
- Algebra
- Logarithmic and exponential functions
- Trigonometry
- Differentiation
- Integration
- Numerical solution of equations
- Vectors
- Differential equations
- Complex numbers
Unit M1: Mechanics 1 (Paper 4)
- Forces and equilibrium
- Kinematics of motion in a straight line
- Newton’s laws of motion
- Energy, work and power
Unit M2: Mechanics 2 (Paper 5)
Knowledge of the content of unit M1 is assumed, and candidates may be required to demonstrate such knowledge in answering questions.
- Motion of a projectile
- Equilibrium of a rigid body
- Uniform motion in a circle
